BACKGROUND: The use of online food ordering applications is widespread; however, to date, there have been no studies on the effect of the menu calorie labeling in online food ordering applications on the consumers' dietary habits and food choices in Saudi Arabia. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the response of the consumers to the menu energy-labeling on online food ordering applications in Saudi Arabia by exploring: (a) the consumers' preference and frequency of ordering from online food applications; (b) the consumers' self-reported knowledge, awareness, and interest towards menu calorie information on online food ordering applications; (c) the impact of menu calorie information on online food ordering applications on consumers' food choices. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study conducted between October and November of 2022. A total of 419 participants were recruited using an online questionnaire. RESULTS: The findings showed that most participants (59%) preferred to order using online food ordering applications. Saving time and effort are the main reasons for using online food ordering applications (61%). Nearly half of the participants (45%) were interested in viewing calorie information on online food ordering applications menus and (47%) did notice calorie information displayed on the menu when ordering from an online food ordering application. Calorie information in online food ordering applications menus is primarily utilized to monitor intake for weight maintenance (19%). The ability to calculate energy requirements and interest in viewing calorie information on online food ordering applications menus were linked to younger age and a higher level of education (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Overall, consumers showed limited awareness and interest towards the menu calorie information displayed in the online food ordering applications. These findings highlight the importance of developing public health programs to increase public awareness about calorie labeling on menus to aid in the success and effectiveness of the calorie labeling in online food ordering applications as a tool to promote balanced energy intake. Further research is needed to understand the most effective way to deliver calorie information to consumers on an online food ordering application.

A rapid, convenient, and sensitive analytical technique for quantitative analysis of triamcinolone acetonide (TAC) in pharmaceutical nasal spray dosage form using the blue tetrazolium colorimetric reaction and UV spectrophotometric method was developed and validated. Beer's law of the developed method was proven in the concentration range of 10-40 µg/mL and showed a specific linear relationship with coefficient value R2 = 0.998. The LOQ level was 9.99 µg/mL, with (RSD = 0.26%). From precision assay, RSD values have been obtained for the repeatability and intermediate precision, which were found to be (RSD = 1.65%) and (RSD = 2.01%), respectively, indicating that the method is reproducible. Recovery studies showed mean recoveries in the range of (100.08-103.65 %), meeting the acceptance criteria for accuracy. In addition, we compared the results of the developed method UV-Vis spectrophotometric procedure with those of a well-established official USP analytical procedure (HPLC), and the results showed good agreement. The proposed UV method represents a potential alternative to the official USP analytical assay procedure (HPLC) for estimating TAC in nasal spray forms. Furthermore, it has the potential to be implemented in routine use for rapid qualitative and quantitative determinations for TAC.

Although there is an increased interest in zinc intake and its role in boosting immunity, to our knowledge, no studies have investigated the relationship between dietary zinc intake and immunity in Saudi adults. This cross-sectional study aimed to measure the extent to which the dietary zinc impacted the immune health of 252 Saudi adults aged 18 years and above. Immune health was assessed using the Immune Status Questionnaire (ISQ), and dietary zinc intake was estimated using an adapted zinc-specific version of the Saudi Food Frequency Questionnaire (SFFQ). Three scores were calculated for use in the statistical analyses (zinc intake score, immune status score, and health status score). A linear regression analysis was used to investigate the association between the dietary zinc intake and immune and health status scores. The means of dietary zinc intake, ISQ, and health status scores were 46.94, 7.10, and 7.84, respectively. We found that a high zinc intake score was directly associated with immune status score (p = 0.006) but was not associated with the health status score. The association remained significant after controlling for socio-demographic factors. Further studies are needed to confirm these findings.

Genetic polymorphism in long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) HOTAIR is linked with the risk and susceptibility of various cancers in humans. The mechanism involved in the development of CRC is not fully understood but single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) can be used to predict its risk and prognosis. In the present case-control study, we investigated the relationship between HOTAIR (rs12826786, rs920778, and rs1899663) polymorphisms and CRC risk in the Saudi population by genotyping using a TaqMan genotyping assay in 144 CRC cases and 144 age- and sex-matched controls. We found a significant (p < 0.05) association between SNP rs920778 G > A and CRC risk, and a protective role of SNPs rs12826786 (C > T) and rs1899663 (C > A) was noticed. The homozygous mutant "AA" genotype at rs920778 (G > A) showed a significant correlation with the female sex and colon tumor site. The homozygous TT in SNP rs12816786 (C > T) showed a significant protective association in the male and homozygous AA of SNP rs1899663 (C > A) with colon tumor site. These results indicate that HOTAIR can be a powerful biomarker for predicting the risk of colorectal cancer in the Saudi population. The association between HOTAIR gene polymorphisms and the risk of CRC in the Saudi population was reported for the first time here.

Metabolites of proper fatty acids modulate the inflammatory response and are essential for normal brain development; equally, abnormal fatty acid metabolism plays a critical role in the pathology of autism. Currently, dietary supplements are often used to improve the core symptoms of Autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The present study analyzed the effects of orally supplemented omega-3 (ω-3) and vitamin B12 on ameliorating oxidative stress and impaired lipid metabolism in a propionic acid (PPA)-induced rodent model of autism, together with their effect on the gut microbial composition, where great fluctuations in the bacterial number and strains were observed; interestingly, polyunsaturated fatty acids such as omega-3 induced higher growth of the gram-positive bacterium Staphylococcus aureus and decreased the survival rates of Clostridia sp. as well as other enteric bacterial strains. Thirty-five young male western albino rats were divided into five equal groups. The first group served as the control; the second group was given an oral neurotoxic dose of PPA (250 mg/kg body weight/day) for 3 days. The third group received an oral dose of ω-3 (200 mg/kg body weight/day) for 30 days after the 3-day PPA treatment. Group four was given an oral dose of vitamin B12 (16.7 mg/kg/day) for 30 days after PPA treatment. Finally, group five was given a combination of both ω-3 and vitamin B12 at the same dose for the same duration after PPA treatment. Biochemical parameters related to oxidative stress and impaired fatty acid metabolism were investigated in the brain homogenates of each group. The effects of the dietary supplements on the gut microbiota were also observed. The PPA-treated autistic model expressed significantly higher levels of lipid peroxides and 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX) and significantly less glutathione (GSH), glutathione S-transferase (GST), and cyclooxygenase 2 (COX2) than the control group. However, a remarkable amelioration of most of the impaired markers was observed with oral supplementation with ω-3 and vitamin B12, either alone or in combination. Our results concluded that impairment at various steps of the lipid metabolic pathways may contribute to the development of autism; however, supplementation with ω-3 and vitamin B12 can result in a positive therapeutic effect.

For better identification of novel diagnostic urinary biomarker in Type 2 diabetic nephropathy (T2DN), methodological and reporting quality is as important as validity of biomarkers. The aim of this systematic review is to find out the best-reported diagnostic urinary biomarkers study in T2DN based on STARD criteria. We also analyzed the validity of urinary markers in the selected articles those followed STARD criteria. The diagnostic accuracy of urinary biomarkers on T2DN is not conclusive because of the poor reporting quality and differences in adjustment for conventional risk factors. For a proper validation of urinary biomarkers on T2DN, in future large well-designed longitudinal studies, with specific prediction analysis and validation of the biomarkers by adjusting with possible conventional risk factors.
